Thomas Malthus and Issues of Population and Economic Development

 

 

Thomas Malthus, a demographer and political economist is best known for his very controversial theories concerning population growth. Utilizing the reading in your textbook and additional web and/or print sources, research his theory, copy and paste these questions into a Word document, then type your answers below each question:

 

1) Who is Thomas Malthus and explain his theory

 

2) What natural/physical occurrences, past and/or present, can you locate and document that support his theory?

 

3) What human historic events have occurred that support his theory?

 

4) What current population issues in the world may lend support to his theory?

 

5) What social or moral issues are raised by this theory that could help you to argue against it?

 

6) What occurrences can you document that discredit his theory?

 

7) What is meant by the term Neo-Malthusianism?

 

8) What alternative solutions can you offer for the rigid Malthusian stance?

 

 

 

As with all research projects in this class, be sure to refer to Writing Guidelines section of the online course manual. Your paper should have a cover page and complete APA bibliography. Be sure to research and document your responses. Do not make claims without backing up those claims with research data and cite your sources in the paper as well as in the bibliography. As discussed in Writing Guidelines, avoid Wikipedia and other cyber-encyclopedias, or use very sparingly.

 

There is no length requirement for this assignment. Use the amount of space necessary to fully answer each question. A rough guideline is at least one hefty paragraph per question and don’t forget to document the research sources used to answer the questions.
