The Jaguar Smile: A Nicaraguan Journey

As per WSU’s UCORE requirements, writing assignments must includean 8-10 page research assignment. You will
write one book report/term paperon Salman Rushdie’s Jaguar Smile.
It must be 8 full pages minimum, double-spaced, 12-Times Roman and 1-inch margins (with a separate title
page).
Your report also MUST have a separate page for sources and a separate title page that includes your name,
class section and student number.
The paper must be double-spaced, 12-Times Roman, standard indentations, 1-inch margins as well as normal
character spacing. A book report should consist of two sections:

1. The first is a brief summary (no more than two pages) of the central political themes of the book.
In here you must explainwhat the book is about, what major political events does it cover€¦I AM NOT LOOKING
FOR A REVIEWof the book as I’ve read it before. Remember who your audience is (a political science
professor), focus on political behavior.
2. The second, and most important section of the report, is a discussion of the principal patterns of
political behavior, their consequences to Global Politics and your political analysis of the central
political events described in the book. So in this section I am looking for three things:
a) What patterns of political behavior do you see in the story? Who are the major players? What do they
do and why do they do what they do?
b) Discuss the consequences of said behavior. How did the actions of a hegemon affect people at all
three levels of analysis?
c) Give me your educated, sophisticated opinion as a political scientist of why events happened as they
did in the story. Do you think the political events described had any effects on Global Politics? Use one of
the major political theories as your foundation for this discussion.
