Pretend you are a Police Academy instructor who needs to develop a PowerPoint presentation for police officers on an emerging technology that addresses a long-standing police issue.  Your choice of topics is as follows

Book title is Police technology by Raymond E. Foster

  1. Video Recording of Police-Citizen Encounters/Body Cameras (Ch.15)
  2. Video Recording of Police Interrogations (Ch.15)
  3. Less-Lethal Use of Force Devices for Crowd Control (Ch.18 & 21)
  4. Less-Lethal Use of Force Devices for Emotionally-Disturbed Individuals (Ch.18 & 21)
  5. Vehicle Pursuits (Ch.18 & 21)
  6. Gunfire Reduction Technology, e.g, ShotSpotter (Ch.18)
  7. Problem Officers & Early Warning Systems (Ch.19)
  8. Electronic Monitoring of Probationers and Parolees (Ch.21)
  9. Facial Recognition Technology (Ch.21)

Begin by reading the relevant sections of your textbook, but don’t be limited by what is covered; there have been great technological advances since the book was published.  The presentation should address the following questions:

  1. What does the new technology do?
  2. Why is it needed?  What long-standing police issue does this technology address?
  3. How was the problem handled up to this point?
  4. How does the technology work? (Don’t get too technical.)
  5. What are its strengths?
  6. What are its weaknesses, risks, or unintended consequences?

At a minimum, the presentation should be 10 slides with at least 4 sources.

EACH SLIDE MUST CONTAIN THE CITATION FOR EACH SOURCE OF INFORMATION OR GRAPHIC USED IN THE SLIDE.  For instance, if you use information from the textbook/OCR, you would follow it with (Foster, 2005).  If you are showing a picture of a Taser, you might follow it with (https://glenngohr.files.wordpress.com/2007/12/taser.jpg).  If you are using information from an online article on Tasers, you might follow the information with (http://edition.cnn.com/2015/04/14/us/taser-gun-confusion/).  Remember to fully list them alphabetically in the reference list on the last slide, such as:  Foster, R. (2005).  Police Technology.  Upper Saddle River, NJ: Prentice Hall.

HONESTY ALERT:  DON’T PUFF UP YOUR REFERENCE LIST WITH SOURCES YOU DON’T ACTUALLY USE IN THE POWERPOINT PRESENTATION.  EVERY SOURCE CITED IN A SLIDE SHOULD APPEAR IN THE REFERENCE LIST, AND VICE VERSA.

A good PowerPoint does NOT use whole paragraphs or even entire sentences, since it is intended to accompany a speaker who explains what’s on the screen.  Slides typically move too quickly for viewers to read long text, or long lists of items.   So, use short lists of bulleted or numbered phrases, in outline format, to present key ideas

To get RELIABLEsources of information, you must use the LIBRARY DATABASES as opposed to a Google search, since anyone can post biased, self-serving falsehoods on the Internet.  An example of a misleading web posting might be a “scientific study” on the safety of Tasers, posted by the Taser manufacturer.  Even a professional magazine like “Police Chief” may carry articles deceptively written by advertisers, so check authors’ backgrounds.

To use the Library Databases, first go to the Library Tab in Blackboard.  Click on Database Subject List.  Under Electronic Resources click on Criminal Justice Periodicals. This takes you to the Proquest.  Then type in your topic.  You’ll get a list of articles, starting with the most current.

If you use the database Proquest, and find a good article, you can click on the “Cite this” feature at the top of the page – it will show you the article cited in APA format.    You may copy and paste the citation onto your References List (Bibliography) on your last slide.

DON’T CITE & DON’T TRUST WIKIPEDIA, since anyone with an “agenda” can change the text at any moment.   Look at the Grading Rubric below to make sure you requirements of this assignment
