Portrayals of Male Characters in Bluest Eye and Mother to Mother

The characters Mxolisi in Mother to Mother and Cholly in the Bluest Eye can only fully be understood if we
acknowledge the impaxt of racist discriminatory contexts on their development as men. The pieces of Cholly’s life
could be coherent only in the head of a musician (159) and Mxolisi, named to bring peace, is challenged by his
society. Compare and contrast the portrayals of these male characters and discuss the influence of the position
and dicourse of the narrator on our understanding of the characters and their context. Use Higginbotham’s Shades
of Freedom, Blum’s Race: a brief history with moral implications, Clark Worger’s South Africa: The rise and
fall of Apartheid
