analysis of the following 2 images:

http://life.time.com/history/korean-war-classic-photos-by-david-douglas-duncan/#13

The first is an image from the Korean War from Life magazine. The second is the poster graphic for the 1970 movie MASH, whose story-line centers on a group of army doctors serving in the Korean War.

Assignment:
1. Describe the two images in some detail. What do you see in each image? What do you notice in terms of form, line, composition, shadow? Do you perceive any potential bias on the part of the photographer or graphic artist? What is his or her point of view?
2. The photo would be considered to be a documentary photograph? What makes it documentary in nature?
3. The poster is a graphic serving to advertise a movie. What makes it an effective graphic design? What message(s) does it send to the viewer? What do you expect the movie to be about based on the poster?
4. Using the ideas that Kevin talked about on Wednesday about modernism in photography. How could the photo (image 1) be a metaphor for something larger? For instance, could any of the shapes act as a metaphor? Does the photo itself reveal any feelings or thoughts on the part of the photographer? How might the photo be MORE than simply the photo itself?
5. Lastly, compare and contrast the photo and poster. What do each reveal about their particular art form and their intended audience?
