How does the secretion of this enzyme contribute

Gas gangrene is caused by the highly pathogenic bacterium, Clostridium perfringens. This bacterium destroys animal tissue structure by producing an efficient protease that cleaves sequences of X-gly-pro-Y. How does the secretion of this enzyme contribute to the invasive properties of this bacterium? AND why doesn’t this protease affect the bacterium itself?
