Important enough to be discussed at length in both Encounters with teh Archdruid and Desert Solitaire, Glen Canyon Dam serves as a symbol for or against development of the public water resources of the nation.  Its completion in 1962 came shortly before teh passage of federal environmenal legislation that would likely have halted the project.  Analyze the motivations for building Glen Canyon Dam as part of the Pacific Southwestern water Plan and Colorado River Storage Project, and the response of the David Brower-headed Sierra Club to those plans in the 1950s and 1960s.  Finally contrast the views of Brwoer, Abbey and teh Bureau of Reclmation director Floyd Dominy (the third encounter in Encounters with the Archdruid) regarding the dam and development in general.
