Write a well-crafted essay in which you analyze the changes that Latin America has undergone since the end of the Cold War (1989 to now) as Neoliberalism has taken hold in the region, and how Latin America’s relationship with the United States has changed. What did the end of the Cold War mean for Latin America? Describe how Latin Americans came to embrace the market-opening policies that are usually called Neoliberalism. What changes did Neoliberalism bring about? What were some reactions against it? Mexico led the way by putting into place NAFTA (a classic example of Neoliberalism); and it also led the way in having an important sector of its society reject it: the Zapatistas – discuss that. Be sure to bring in other specific countries in which we saw those changes and the consequences of those changes (Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, Venezuela are good examples for you to discuss here).
