Medieval romance stresses the chivalric ideals of courage, loyalty, and mercifulness. Heroes in a romance are driven by a highly refined sense of honor and are expected to behave in ways consistent with these ideals. As scholars have argued, this particular poem seems to complicate the chivalric value system, attempting to depict it in a more realistic manner. Do you agree? In your opinion, does the poem reflect the ideals of chivalry? Why or why not? How and why is Gawain’s adherence to the chivalric code tested over the course of the poem?

1. There are many biblical references in the poem; there are also many pagan or pre-Christian elements. What value system does the poem seem to favor? How does the poem balance these different religious and spiritual orientations?
2. This is a very masculine poem, filled with violence, male comradery, and boasting. Within this world, what is the role of women? Compare and contrast Hrothgar’squeen,Wealhtheow, and Grendel’s mother.
3. Think about the poem from a cultural and social standpoint. All dominant cultures and societies create “others” or monsters, outcasts who don’t fit into so-called normal society. By condemning these “others,” dominant culture constructs its own sense of superiority and community. How do the Danes and Geatsuse monsters to construct their dominant cultural identity? Are the monsters really as evil and villainous as the narrative wants us to believe?
4. Compare and contrast these two poems. How are Beowulf and Gawain different as characters? Both poems deal with heroes. What heroic values are stressed in each poem? How is Gawain’s chivalry different from the warrior culture to which Beowulf subscribes? What themes are shared by the two poems?
