The Book of Love

Order Description

The Topic

A) Both the poet of the SoS and Patricia Lockwood frequently relate human beings and human experiences—especially love or desire—to animals and animal imagery. Compare and contrast at least two of each poet’s most striking uses of these images, first concentrating on how the particular examples work (are they visually and physically descriptive of the humans, or do they rather indicate something about human emotions or mental states when in love), and second taking the images as a larger motif. What does the animal motif suggest or symbolize in the SoS and what does it suggest or symbolize in MFH?

Come to the second class session with a one-page rough draft of your response to the question you have chosen. Include a list of whatever in your opinion are the most persuasive kinds of evidence from both books backing up your claims.
