Assessment Criteria:

Addressing the exact topic

Demonstrated basic understanding and ability to apply theoretical

material

Demonstrated basic ability to analyse a film text

Construction ofa clear and coherent argument

Ability to write

clearly and in an appropriately structured way

Accurate citation of source material.

To referto a part ofa film without retelling the

story, simply indicate in the essay which scene you are referring to. For instance, you can write, “The scene in the cafe is an example
of…”, and then go on to explain specifically howthe scene is relevant to the topic you are addressing. Note: the term “sequence”

is sometimes used interchangeably with “scene”to referto a portion ofthe film. To broadly distinguish between the two terms, a scene
is a portion ofthe narrative that occurs in one place and time, whereas a sequence is a piece of action that may or not be equivalent to a
scene.

Don’t referto an example if it’s not relevant to the topic. State clearly in your analysis what the example is an example

of. Don’t jump to conclusions about characters orwhat happens in the story. Instead of describing characters or occurrences, focus on how
the film conveys or suggests things about characters and occurrences.

Support your answer by referring to specific sequences in the

film. Be as specific as you can. Going into detail is a good idea, because it gives you more to write about and shows that you’ve thought
about the film in detail. In a film assignment, there is nothing wrong with talking about specific shots or other details. You can write a
whole paragraph about one scene if it’s relevant to the topic. Don’t try to talk about every scene in the film orthe whole narrative

from start to finish; instead, focus on a few significant scenes that you can relate to the topic.
