Project 1.  Web Analysis Project: Business Models and Website Design

Analyze the properly selected business models and Web sites of an e-commerce business segment.  You need to select several online businesses in the segment and compare them.

Describe the segment analyzed and argue why you have selected these sites to represent the segment. You may select one of the e-tail segments.  However, you are encouraged to seek out more challenging and innovative business models.  Among the examples are: social networking, gaming,  virtual worlds, m-commerce app category, blogging as used for business,  co-creations segments, opinion aggregation as used for marketing, local business aggregation,  peer-to-peer businesses,  Web publishing, and so forth.  You may also select a digital business eco-system and analyze the inter-relationships in it.

Analyze the business model of the segment.  Compare and contrast the selected sites with respect to their range of capabilities, audience targeting, attractiveness and effectiveness of the business model, Web-site congruence with the business model, attractiveness, usability, speed, design, customization/personalization, advertisements carried, and other characteristics. How do the sites involve the viewer/participant?

Develop your own evaluation criteria, specific to the segment you are analyzing.  The criteria you adopt to evaluate the sites are very important and should be stated explicitly.  The use of literature (some of it Web-based) in this selection is encouraged and all the sources should be cited.  Use tables and/or graphics (e.g., radar charts) to compare and contrast.  Illustrate as much as possible with screen snapshots, but only to make a specific point.

Based on the analysis, produce a specification for the ideal, yet economically realistic, site for the selected industry segment.  A skeleton implementation is welcome, but not required.
