Review the information on Master Patient Indexes in your textbook and in the lecture material. Develop a MPI Policy for a hospital that would guide all staff on the purpose, importance, and use of the MPI. Place special emphasis on the need to avoid the creation of duplicate records.

What is a policy? In short, policies simply guide our actions. Policies can be guidelines, rules, regulations, laws, principles, or directions. They say what is to be done, why it should be done, how it should be done, and perhaps who should do it. Hospital policies are in a formal professional format with a title, data, and perhaps other heading information. Be sure your policy looks official and professional.

For an MPI policy, first policy statement might be:

1. There will be a master patient index created for every patient who has an encounter at the facility.
