Explain how lipids can lead to ATP production.

Competency 208.5.6: Lipids – The graduate constructs models of fatty acids and demonstrates why lipids are essential to the functioning of cells.

Introduction:

You have been asked to instruct dietitians in a local community health center on the importance of fat in the diet and particularly how no-fat diets affect the biochemical processes of the body.

Requirements:

Design either a presentation (e.g., PowerPoint, Keynote, Google Presentation) or a brief report (Microsoft Word, Google Document) on the role of fat and why it is important in the diet.

Note: Please save presentation documents as *.ppt, *.pptx (PowerPoint) or *.pdf (Portable Document Format) files.

A.  Part 1
1.  Explain how lipids can lead to ATP production.
2.  Compare saturated and unsaturated fatty acids.
a.  Create two original 3-D models to demonstrate the chemical structure of a saturated and an unsaturated fatty acid.

Note: Include photographs of your original models in your attached presentation or as separate attachments to this task.

B.  Part 2
1.  Explain the role of fatty acids in the body.
2.  Provide a diagram to demonstrate the fluid mosaic structure of cell membranes.

Note: Your diagram should clearly label the following parts: phospholipid, hydrophilic portion, hydrophobic portion, and membrane protein(s).

C.  Part 3
1.  Explain how no-fat diets can affect the biochemical functions of the body (i.e., nutrient absorption, essential fatty acids).

D.  When you use sources, include all in-text citations and references in APA format.

Note: For definitions of terms commonly used in the rubric, see the attached Rubric Terms.

Note: When using sources to support ideas and elements in a paper or project, the submission MUST include APA formatted in-text citations with a corresponding reference list for any direct quotes or paraphrasing. It is not necessary to list sources that were consulted if they have not been quoted or paraphrased in the text of the paper or project.

Note: No more than a combined total of 30% of a submission can be directly quoted or closely paraphrased from sources, even if cited correctly. For tips on using APA style, please refer to the APA Handout web link included in the General Instructions section.
