Essay 3 (Contextual Analysis): Relationships
Purpose: Write a complex essay that explores common elements found in at least three of the texts weve studied this semester. For example, maybe youve noticed that
relationships between men and women are difficult because __________________. You might write an essay exploring that issue. Maybe youve noticed that setting is a
crucial element in each of theses texts because ___________________ . Remember that your thesis needs to be debatable. Relationships are important is a failing thesis.
Everybody agrees that relationships are important.
Audience: An educated, college audience.
Important Notes:
1. This essay is worth a big portion of your grade, so choose a topic that you are sincerely interested in and one that is rich enough to sustain at least a six-page
essay.
2. Avoid sweeping generalizations (greed is bad, family is important) or surface observations that everybody noticed.
3. To be considered for an A/B grade, you must use two additional class texts such as the film reviews, essays or material from the Students Guide, or the Smith essay.
Note: To use a text means that you quote or paraphrase the source at least once. Instead of using five primary sources (stories or films or plays), its best to use
three primary sources and two secondary ones (reviews or criticism or biographical notes). Its ineffective to cover a story or movie in one paragraph!
5. Acknowledge your sources in the body of your paper as stipulated by MLA (or APA) and provide an accurate Works Cited page; otherwise your essay will be lowered a
letter grade. (Writing a proper Works Cited page is time consuming. Dont leave it until the last minute.) Make sure to credit your sources.
6. Avoid problems you had in earlier essays.
7. Make use of each workshopping session.
8. Remember to edit your essay. For full credit, use SWE.
9. Submit drafts that show changes you made as you composed your essay. Otherwise your essay will be marked down a letter grade.
Length: 2,000-3,000 words (6-8 typed and edited pages). Dont worry if your paper runs a bit longer.
