Please note that I’m a student in a French university, the method of writing is quite different. Here is the methodology of the French dissertation.
Introduction:
– Catchphrase
– Statement of the subject
– Reflection, analysis of the terms of the subject
– The problem formulation
– Announcement of the plan
You must start the dissertation with a catch phrase, you could use a quote or you could come up with a phrase that will grabs the reader’s attention to the subject. And then you must include in the introduction : definitions of the terms of the subject (from the title), talk about the historical context and analyse it. Finally, you must propose a “problématique” (problematic) which is a question that will be the core of the subject. In order to respond to the question, there should be a plan for the dissertation.
Development :
The development of the subject will be the answer to the problématique in 2-3 parts, followed by the order of the announced plan. This is the part where you analyse, argue and illustrate examples to prove your point. You could rely on specific facts, figures, quotes … .
Conclusion :
In the conclusion, you summarize what you said.
