COMMUNICATION THEORY

QUESTION 1.
Do colours used in media have any meaning? If not what do the colours pink and blue “really” mean? Originally when the folks in marketing who think these things up were deciding on colours for boys and girls clothing (that being a new idea itself, a little over a century ago), they determined that little boys should be dressed in pink and little girls in blue. Their reasoning was that pink was part of the red spectrum, denoting vitality and strength. Blue, was a cooler colour, indicative of feminine reserve. Very quickly, for reasons about which I know nothing, those colour pairings were reversed. Somehow pink became associated with the feminine and blue with the masculine. For about a century those have been the colours of marketing for infants, depending on their gender. But what does that mean? What are the real characteristics of little boys and little girls? What impact do social portrayals of colour have on the meaning of gender? What does it do to the upbringing of children? What do the colours say about a child’s social acceptability? A little boy wears pink–what does that mean? A little girl wears blue–then what? (And is it worse for a boy to wear pink than a girl to wear blue?)

Please take this thread seriously. I am very interested in finding out what worked and what did not in this course (COMMUNICATION THEORY). This was the first offering of this version of the course and it is very important to me to get a sense of where the course worked and where it could be improved. If you have thoughts that you do not
