Assignment Prompt and Context
Create a set of instructions for a technical device or procedure, preferably one in your own field. The instructions should be for a specific process, task, or product and should use specific technical skills you are currently developing in your other classes. Your instructions should also be relevant and informative for your intended audience, and must include all of the following elements:
• NO RESEARCH
• Write in imperative mode
• Introduction: Title, table of contents, safety warnings, materials
• Prose: Talk about who is interesting about the product or procedure, what knowledge do you need, real world application.
• Conclusion: Index, etc.
1. A title page with a clear and limiting title.
2. Demonstration of knowledge of your topic, indicated by an appropriate level of detail and technicality.
3. Descriptions, specifications, and visuals for all special materials and equipment needed to complete the instructions.
4. Properly labeled figures (diagrams, icons, illustrations) to illustrate steps.
5. Ordered steps under the decimal format (i.e. the numbering format I am utilizing for these instructions). Also remember the following:
6. 1. Avoid including too much information in each individual step.
6.2. Avoid large leaps among steps.

6. Notes, hazard notices, and safety information (as necessary).
7. Clear organization by including a Table of Contents, section headings, and a Help or FAQ section, or an Appendix (as deemed necessary for your topic).
8. Finally, while this assignment should be based on something you know well, any information consulted for the instructions, as well as images used for figures, must be documented and cited in a SEPARATE References page submitted with your final draft.

Assessment Criteria*:
Introduction / Safety Information 25%
Document Design and Use of Visuals 25%
Organization (Title Page, Table of Contents, Steps, Help Section, FAQs Section, Appendix) 25%
Technical proficiency and detail 25%

* A successful assignment involves instructions that are clear and readable and have an effective visual design. Overall assessment will be based on the technical proficiency of the instructions, quality and readability of the text, functionality of the instructional visuals, effectiveness of the design, and on the grammatical and logical strengths of the steps, sequences, and transitions. Furthermore, and most importantly, ask yourself if you have engineered your instructions so your audience can successfully complete the task using only your instructions.
