Code of Conduct

Does your place of business have s code of ethics and/or a code of conduct?

Practically every major professional organization has a stated code of conduct (see list at “From the Expert” tab). This is particularly true for the accounting profession. A Code of Ethics Statement is an effective tool for fighting fraud because it sets the frame work for doing the right thing even when no one seems to be watching.

Preuss, L. (2010, July). Codes of Conduct in Organisational Context: From Cascade to Lattice-Work of Codes. Journal of Business Ethics, pp. 471-487.

Pick the organization you work for, or have worked for in the past (Pick American Express) and in a 1-2 page single-spaced paper in APA format, describe its Code of Conduct and/or its Code of Ethics and answer the following questions: Do you think that having a formal organizational Code of Ethics or Code of Conduct Statement is an effective tool to fight fraud? Why or why not? Do people take it seriously? Do you personally feel bound by it? How can it be improved?

If your organization does not have a Code of Conduct or a Code of Ethics, please evaluate the AICPA Code of Professional Conduct
