SPAN 4319/SPAN 5350/CULS 5365 – Goals and Outcomes:
CHARACTERIZE Characterize and understand different historical periods in Latin America, from its Prehispanic roots, the colonial encounter, modern developments, and its present day expressions.
ANALYZE Analyze the ways in which culture acts as a social category (like a social glue) and how it expands, contracts, and develops over time.
SYNTHESIZE Synthesize how scholars interpret culture, by considering their theories and their approach in the context of Latin America.
CONTRAST Contrast how race, class, gender, sexuality, politics, language, and/or culture impact and/or reflect the Latin American experience.
APPLY Apply the use of primary (if applicable) and secondary sources by comprehending the differences between them and acquiring the rudimentary skills of a research paper.
Guidelines for undergraduate students (SPAN 4319):
This paper must cover a specific topic or case study within the themes or time periods from the class. It must be at least 2,000 words in length, 12-point font, in your own words (app. 8-10 pages), and with a bibliography of 5-7 peer-reviewed, academic sources. If you quote directly from an article or book, you must provide proper attribution and citation of your sources. Your paper must include a thesis statement that covers the content of your overall paper and engage with at least 3 of the 5 Goals and Outcomes (above).
