Poetry is a very compact form of communication that packs a lot of information into a text. Because text is everywhere, so too is poetryfrom the poems that we read in books or that we [illegally] download from various sources to the advertising that assaults us on a daily basis. By analyzing text as poetry, we may see more of the subtle meaning/implications of events in our lives.

Task: Choose a text (i.e., a poem, a song, an advertisement, etc., and preferably one not discussed in class) and specifically explain how it may be treated as a poem. Although you will likely need to provide a brief analysis of the text and explain what the poem means, the focus of the essay is on explaining how the text is a poem rather than providing a length analysis of the poems meaning.

Length: 1000 1250 of your own words (4 5 pages)

NOTE: THIS MEANS THAT QUOTATIONS ARE NOT COUNTED AS PART OF YOUR WORD COUNT. ALTHOUGH YOU MAY USE QUOTATIONS, THEY SHOULD BE USED SPARINGLY RATHER THAN AS A SUBSTANTIAL PART OF YOUR ESSAY.
