Topic: Last week, we were introduced to the theoretical approach of constructivism, and we saw how constructivism makes arguments about the potential for transformative change in the international system–such as the peaceful end of the Cold War.

This week, we see counter-arguments about change from the perspective of structural realism and long cycle/power transition theory. Our debate will focus on these rival perspectives, and who has the better approach for explaining systemic change.

Position 2. Realism-based theories on power transition offer a better framework for understanding past and/or future change at the level of the international system
