This paper is to be an analytical, interpretive essay.The focus will be on PRIMARY SOURCE materials related to the course. By primary sources I mean literature or records from the culture and/or period being studied. You will be expected to take a position on your topic. This thesis should be clear and supported by plausible argument from primary source material and background. When I say the paper is to be analytical and interpretive, that does not mean descriptive. I highly recommend that the paper be comparative: compare different cultural patterns or values by analyzing primary sources from each culture; compare different philosophers on a limited number of issues. If possible, find text with good index and some good notes/commentary with it. Second, get a good detailed summary of the story of each¦and some secondary scholarly literature that comment on these works..and their main heroes (Gilgamesh and Odysseus)though the paper is best if focus is on the primary source texts and using select passages directly from them. Look for the goals and ideals of the two heroes. Find a few specific passages from the epic poems that illustrate or even state those goals or ideals or values. These two epics are over a thousand years apart“Gilgamesh developed in early Mesopotamia; Odyssey in early Greece. The paper should end up comparing the two characters“but also the two cultures.
