During the first half of the 19th Century labor was a much debated issue. The primary labor source of the North came from both poor native born citizens and immigrants. In the South slaves provided a large portion of the laber pool. The conditions of poor labers of the North made their condition worse than that of slaves or the condition of the slave was worse than that of the poor laborers of the North.
