Case Study of a Site of Adult Learning in San Antonio
Participants will form in teams of 2-3 to visit a site of adult learning and report their findings to the class. The team will select (and sign up in class for) a community center, museum, or historical landmark which addresses the history or culture of south Texas. Possible examples include, but are not limited to: the Witte Museum, The Institute of Texan Cultures, one of the missions, San Antonio Museum of Art, the San Antonio Library, the Alamo, Carver Community Cultural Center, Museo Alameda or Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center.
The team will submit a summary of findings including:
The purpose of the organization, mission, history, services provided to adults
Participants in the adult learning programs (numbers, demographics)
Identification of any research studies of this organization. Are there studies of outcomes?
Are there barriers to participation?
The team will visit the site together and, if possible, interact with staff. What did you see? What did you learn? Did you identify any barriers to participation?
The team will create either a PowerPoint presentation or a written summary of findings and make a 20 minute presentation to the class (80 points). The group will submit a hard copy of the PowerPoint or summary to the instructor. Each individual participant will submit a 2 – 3 page analysis of lessons learned, citing connections to adult learning theory (20 points). Failure to attend the presentation will result in an F on the assignment, except in the case of an unavoidable emergency. If there is an excused absence, the individual is responsible for working with the group to participate in the presentation through technology (it may be pre-recorded or real time). Lack of participation in the group process (some may label it “social loafing”) will result in a lower grade for attendance/participation.
