Essay Questions

Answer the following question in the form of a 2000 word (approx. 7-8 page) essay. You must use one established referencing style (MLA, Chicago etc…) to make clear within the body of your essay which sources (books, articles, etc..) you have relied on to help you make your arguments/points. You must also list all those sources on a separate bibliography page attached to the end of your essay. You may not use internet sources for your essay. All essays must have page margins of no less than one inch on all sides, be typed and printed in 12 point font, double-spaced, with page numbers. Please staple the pages of your essay together. No cover pages. Put your name, student number, and the course number at the top of your first page. Essay are due in class on June 13, and if late, will not be accepted after the final exam under any circumstances.

Your essay should use and cite a minimum of five sources (legitimate sources include scholarly books, scholarly articles, or relevant primary documents). If you are unsure whether or not a particular source is appropriate, please talk to me about it before using it in your essay.

For the essay I have suggested titles of books you may want to consult/read in addition to any relevant articles or chapters from the CHST 712 course reader. Bear in mind that if an author has written a book on a subject, s/he probably also published articles on that subject you may want to look for. These are just a few suggestions to get you going. You do not have to use these if you find other suitable sources.

1. “You can’t have a successful city without a good public transit system.” Write an essay agreeing or disagreeing with this statement. In your essay you must refer in detail to at least one particular form of public transit (subways, buses, streetcars, cable cars) and its development and effectiveness in one particular American city during a specific time period (i.e. spanning one or two decades)
