Throughout this course, we have discussed how German Identity and German Culture have changed from the end of the 19th Century to today. What counts as typical German-ness has changed. In a short paper (5 pages or more) choose one of the following topics/aspects of German Culture and describe how it has changed. What historical events have affected it? What role did politics play?
Topics:
1. Who is a German? / What makes one German? Who counts as a German? Who doesn’t count as a German? Who identifies as a German?
2. Where/what is the country of Germany? Is Germany a truly united nation? Has Germany ever been a united nation? How have the borders of Germany defined German-ness?
3. The role of women. What was the typical German woman’s role in society and what is it now? What has changed in the way German society treats women and what do Germans expect from women?
4. Education and society. In what ways does the German state prepare people for a role in society? What does German culture emphasize in education? What do people expect the state or other entities to provide for education?
