Research and Presentation

Instructions:  Work in groups of NO MORE THAN THREE; follow the procedure outlined below and produce a 7 to 10 minute presentation that will be given to the rest of the class.

Objectives:  Research the current ‘state of the art’ for this technology as it applies to input SENSING APPLICATIONS in industry; you may focus on applications or the transducer technology in particular.  Your presentation should emphasize the measurement of the real-world condition (pressure, flow, temperature, vibration, etc.) for input into a PLC, microcontroller or other automation processing system.

Procedure:  Using any resources you choose:  Internet, vendor catalogs, textbooks, library, journal articles, expert interviews, etc. prepare a 7 to 10 minute presentation.  Your research should identify such details as:

  • How the device or technology works
  • Examples where it is used
  • Specifications (Range, output, etc.)
  • Vendors who sell the device
  • AT LEAST ONE Application – Be specific
  • Any deficiencies of the device or technology
  • Etc.

Identify AT LEAST three sources of your research in your presentation AND no more than TWO directly from Internet Web Pages; journal articles found on-line would be considered a journal not a web page.

These should all be sensors used in industrial settings; if I can purchase it at a consumer location like Radio Shack, Home Depot or Wal-Mart then it most likely would not be suitable.  This presentation should be between seven to ten minutes in length depending upon content and number of members in the group.

This presentation should adhere to the Report Guidelines posted under ‘Course Information’ on-line and good presentation practices.  See the date posted on-line for due date.
