Chinese students of the California Dream

Your task is to define Chinese students of the California Dream or myth. Analyze nowadays what the Chinese students’s California dream means. Why do many Chinese students come to California (cause: job, education, social insurance etc.) ? To support your claims, you can use the some article:

“Proofs” by Richard Rodriguez .

“Coming to California: Chasing the Dream” by Jewelle Taylor Gibbs and Teiahsha Bankhead.

“Maid in LA” by Pierrette Hondagneu-Sotelo

“Invisible Men” by William Langewiesche

If you quote some sentences from these articles, you must be use division (article name, author) in the end of the sentences.

This is an expository essay. Expository is an adjective that means “intended to explain or describe something” (NOAD). This essay style explains and analyzes a topic other than yourself. Your experience might be used to support objective claims, but it should not be the emphasis of the paper.

1. Organize your essay around an explicit thesis statement. Be sure all supporting claims relate to the thesis. Support all claims with quotes, paraphrases, statistics, facts, personal experience.

2. Incorporate a minimum of two quotes or paraphrases, using signal phrases and appropriate in-text citations. In other words, paraphrase or quote definitions of the California Dream based on the reading, and relate that to your analysis. You are not required to do original research (you will for the next essay), but you may if you wish.

3. To increase familiarity with the classic college essay requirements, be sure your thesis statement is the last sentence of the first paragraph.

4. Although your focus is on a topic other than yourself, you may use your personal experience to support your topic sentences/claims. You might also develop an interesting introduction using a personal experience. In these very specific ways, the use of the “I” pronoun is appropriate (this may be contrary to what you have learned in the past). However, personal experience is just one type of support for claims, so do not make this a personal narrative style essay. Limit your use of personal experience.
