Assignment 2: LASA 3

The Research Proposal

Overview / Scenario

Proposing and conducting research is an integral process of scholastic development. Through the course project of this class, you will have the opportunity to do the groundwork for a research proposal. Going forward, you have the option to continue revising the proposal you draft in this course or start afresh. However, the experience you gain in completing this project will be invaluable.

Your course project for E6100 comprises two components:

The Research Proposal (draft)
The Literature Review
The literature review you present as part of the course project should support your research proposal.

Important Note:

In the initial few modules, you will post various components of your research proposal such as the topic, research question(s), etc. to the Discussion Area where your facilitator and peers will provide feedback. You are expected to incorporate this feedback as applicable in your research proposal. You will not submit the research proposal until Module 7. In Module 5, you will also begin work on the literature review to support your proposal. Again, the literature review will not be submitted until Module 7.

What is a research proposal?

The research proposal, in many respects, is a contract, clearly stating the goals to be accomplished by the research. It documents the process and rationale that will serve as the basis for comprehensive investigation of a problem worthy of further study. The proposal specifies which aspects of the problem the proposed study will examine, outlines where the proposed study falls in relation to research that has preceded it, and details the methods to be used to gather and analyze data. Research proposals serve as documents used by Institutional Review Boards to ensure that the rights of human participants will be protected. Even though the research proposal is a preliminary document, when it is done well, the proposal can and should serve as the foundation for the final written research report.

The research proposal in education typically contains an Introduction, the Literature Review, and the Methodology. These major sections are followed by a Reference section along with Appendices, if necessary.

Tools

Use the course text as a reference for your work on the project.

Task Listings

Your course project will be divided into a number of tasks related to the weekly content covered in the course. The project tasks are threaded through the course.

Task 1: Identifying a Topic of Interest (Module 1)

The first step in developing a proposal is identifying an area of interest. The major charge of education today is to engage in ongoing improvement. What are the problems or issues that exist in your setting that might be addressed through a structured research study? Do some preliminary reading to find out how others in the field have approached these problems or issues. In most empirical research studies, authors include a section called “implications for further research”. Have prior research studies suggested topics that might be of interest to you? Based on your reading, you should make a list of possible research topics. From this list, identify the one topic that you would like to study further.

Format

By Monday, September 8, 2014, post your list of possible topics and final topic, along with a justification of your selection, supported by your initial reading.

Task 2: Defining the Research Question (Module 2)

Now that you have your research topic, identify the research question for your study. Keep in mind that research is driven by the questions asked. The act of conducting a research study involves obtaining answers to specific questions. The questions you ask will also dictate to a large extent the research methods you use. Examine a number of studies in the professional literature. What are the research questions they address? Do they require qualitative or quantitative investigation? What are the predictions or hypotheses these studies are trying to support? You should identify one major research question.

Format

By Monday, September 15, 2014, post your research question to the appropriate Discussion Area, along with a brief, 100-word justification of your selection.

Task 3: Identifying a Methodology (Module 3)

After identifying the research question, it is now time to decide what methodology you will use to carry out your research. Analyze various research methodologies and select one.

Quantitative

You might use the following decision tree to help you determine the most appropriate methods for your investigation. It is appropriate for helping you decide which quantitative methods suit your purposes.

To select a quantitative method for your research study, first ask whether you want to investigate a cause and effect relationship. If yes, ask whether you plan to manipulate the independent variable. If yes, you should use an experimental study design and if no, you should use a causal-comparison design. If your answer to the first question was no, meaning that you are not investigating a cause and effect relationship, ask whether you want to investigate a relationship to make a prediction. If yes, you should use a correlational study and if no, you should use a descriptive study.

Qualitative

Three of the popular qualitative methods you may wish to consider are:

Case Study

Case studies involve doing an in-depth investigation of one “unit” of analysis (Individual, group, institution, organization, program, or document).

What are the characteristics of this particular entity, phenomenon, or person?

Ethnography

In this qualitative approach, the investigator studies the cultural patterns and perspectives of participants in their natural setting.

What are the cultural patterns and perspectives of this group in its natural setting?

Historical

This qualitative approach involves interpreting various written documents or examining public and private records. The researcher cannot manipulate variables because the phenomenon of interest has already occurred.

What is the nature of causal relationships among variables at some point in the past?

Find examples of studies that employ these methods. Then decide if one of these is appropriate for meeting your research goals and addressing your research questions. You need to be able to justify your choice.

Format

By Monday, September 22, 2014, post your choice of research methodology to the appropriate Discussion Area, along with a brief justification of your choice.

Task 4: The Literature Review (Module 5)

Begin working on your literature review this week. The typical literature review in educational research:

Provides a rationale for the hypotheses. It should be logical and systematic and link together previous studies that provide a basis for your prediction(s). Information in the literature review is chosen carefully to demonstrate how prior findings are linked to your study.

Contains empirical research evidence to support your research hypotheses along with other information that may explain your theoretical framework.

Shows where your work falls in relation to studies that preceded it, reaches beyond previous work, avoids the mistakes of previous work, and improves on the methods of previous research studies. It further describes how your study will contribute to existing research literature.

Provides a critical analysis of previous work. It discusses how that work contributes directly to your study with attention to the populations studied, the methodology used, and the results of previous works.

Provides a logical discussion, often beginning with a broad focus and narrowing gradually to highlight your investigation. It utilizes both primary sources and secondary sources.

Your completed literature review is due in Module 7.

Format

Your project paper should be in Microsoft Word 2000 or higher. Follow the current APA edition style. Your paper should be double-spaced and in 12pt font.

Task 5: Summary and Conclusions (Module 6)

In the summary of your proposal, you will address the following questions:

What are the major trends as noted by the research literature about my topic?

What are the limitations and delimitations of my research study?

How will this research study advance knowledge in the field of education?

How will the results of my study be of practical value to educators, parents, social workers, or others?

Your completed research proposal (draft) is due in Module 7.

Format

Your project paper should be in Microsoft Word 2000 or higher. Follow the current APA edition style. Your paper should be double-spaced and in 12pt font.

Topic: Academic Achievement and test taking strategies for African American Males.

Question: How to improve the academic achievement and Florida standardized test scores for African American Males?

I chose this topic and this question because in a progression of searching for scholarly research on the achievement gap and African Americans, the results remain the same. The data shows that there is a statistically significant difference in the achievement of African American and Hispanic students compared with their Caucasian and Asian academic counterparts.Education in America is the means to achieving success in life. The prior research indicated, however, that African Americans begin schooling at a tremendous disadvantage. The purpose of this study will be to describe the implications of the gap in achievement and improvement of standardized test forAfrican Americanmales.

Topic: Academic Achievement and test taking strategies for African American Males.

Question: How to improve the academic achievement and Florida standardized test scores for African American Males?

The qualitative methodology that I willchoose for this research topic is a case study and ethnography. I chose the case study methodology because the case study method is a specific field research method. With the case study methodology, I want to bring the reader to the understanding of a particular issue with academic and testing achievement with African American males. In the result of this case study can help extend strategies and implementations that can improve these issues among African American males. I also chose ethnography to analyze the behaviors and social interactions that occur with African American males and let go of my own presumptions and assumptions about African American males in order to effectively learn anything about them. I want to put aside personal feelings and not to judge them.
