There are a number of benefits from the Florida State Licensing Board mandating that mental health experts obtain continuing education in professional ethics every 2 years. One of the benefits is that these professionals learn revised regulations on license laws and ethics. This means that the professionals can better handle their cases with mental patients. Hence, they cannot claim that they were not updated on the new regulations in case they make a mistake. Another benefit is that these updates enhance diversity competence of these professionals. Mentally ill patients need to be handled with care since they are prone to tantrums and mood swings. This continuous education helps them learn new methods of responding to the patients’ attitude and behavior. This mandate also has some drawbacks, and one of the main drawbacks is that it is time consuming. Most professionals believe that they could be doing something productive such as treating patients with the time they spend at the refresher course (Miller & Steiner, 2014).
I believe this mandate has a positive effect on the ethics of practice. This is because these professionals learn of the consequences of not following these codes of ethics. They are, thus, forced to practice proper ethics since they fear repercussions of the law. Furthermore, these professionals learn of new regulations, and can, therefore, practice appropriate codes of ethics.
My suggestions for helping licensed professionals learn more ethics of practice is that they should be allowed to consult with another psychologist during the study. They would learn from each other, especially on those practices that an individual does not understand well. This would also be a good break from sitting in a chair for 8 long hours just listening to a lecture. This breaks the boredom and allows experts to grasp better whatever they are learning (Miller & Steiner, 2014).
