Thesis Statement: The rate of students’ dropout from school can be attributed to a number of factors that cannot be addressed effectively without the involvement of the parents, teachers, policy makers and even the students themselves.
I. Student dropout is not a new phenomenon today, but is one that needs serious attention than it has never received.
A. The problem is caused by a multiplicity of factors including lack of financial and moral support from the parents and teachers.
1. The cost of education is constantly on the rise in both the developed and developing countries. This implies that only the rich and those who are financially stable are capable of raising the fees to keep their children in school. Those unable to do so are doomed to have their students at home or drop out of school.
2. There have been recent reports of students failing to obtain the necessary funding and dropping out of school as staying becomes untenable.
B. Students are dropping out of school as some have not appreciated the value of education.
1. Many people normally go to school in order to secure employment. At least, this is how the situation has been in most countries in the world, both developing and developed.
2. Apparently, the job market in the contemporary society has been flooded in most countries that having a good education is not a guarantee to get a job any more. As such, many students have opted to drop out of school and pursue other endeavors. Many now pursue their talents and do not necessarily have to continue with their education. For instance, there are many musicians, worlds over, who do not have good education, but consider themselves successful. These musicians continue to inspire and mentor other young men and women who look up to them. The result is dropping out of school and starting similar ventures.
II. Education is seen as not the only way to be successful in life and earn one respect of the peers and larger society as perceived by the proponents of the fact that it is not the only requirement for success.
A. Even though education is not considered the only pathway to success, it shapes the student’s skills and critical thinking and the dropout rates should be mitigated by ensuring that parents support their children or have children they are able to educate.
1. Planning families well will ensure that parents have children they can comfortably take care of as has been proven in the developed countries.
2. When the family is well planned, the burden of spending resources on school fees is equally well taken care of
B. Education develops one’s skills not just in academics.
1. Education enhances critical thinking skills.
2. An educated student can easily manage and operate his business venture
III. If the dropout rates are addressed, students will have equal opportunities in different fields including economy, social and political developments.
A. Students will have equal opportunities in the job market.
1. There will be no discrimination since all are well educated.
2. Students will be ready to build their societies indiscriminately.
B. Participation in the nation’s politics and economy.
1. Educated students will contribute to nation building.
2. Their contributions will arise from wide knowledge and interactions with others.
IV. Conclusion
The dropout rates should be lowered or eliminated as they affect the students adversely in their future lives and interactions.
A. All students deserve education.
1. It is a constitutional requirement.
2. It is a parental responsibility.
B. Policy makers have to wake up to the responsibility of making laws responsive to supporting education for all.
1. Financial aid should be given to the needy students.
2. Irresponsible parents and teachers causing students to drop out of school should be punished through heavy fines and penalties.

Conclusion: To begin to reduce the dropout crisis, we must start focusing on the students themselves, not just the numbers. Across the nation, states have implemented high school exit exams to increase performance and strengthen accountability. But in many cases, such exams have not been used to help at-risk high school students to access the interventions and instruction they need to earn their diplomas. Instead, these tests have often caused significant growth in high school dropout rates. Students who cannot pass the exam after repeated attempts give up or are pushed out. Of all the countries that use high school examination systems, the United States is the only nation that uses them to deny students high school diplomas.
