Compare and Contrast movies

Use either one of these movies and a movie of your choice to complete the paper. ("All about my mother"€“ "In the heat of the night"€“ "Mao’s last dancer"€“ and

"Citizen Kane"€“ ".

You will also need the textbook "Looking at Movies an introduction to film (third edition)" to complete this. essay.

Our textbook has been Looking at Movies. Your assignment is to focus on how the book and our discussions have helped you deepen your appreciation of the dynamics of movies and therefore

caused a greater understanding of what makes for a memorable movie.

Basic Requirement

You are analyzing TWO movies: one that you have seen in class (SINCE THE MIDTERM) and one that you have selected for yourself. (For the movie you have chosen, it should be of a certain quality

worthy of analysis. It’s always a good idea (altho not required) to run that by me.)

You are applying techniques from FOUR different chapters. One of these chapters must include "Editing."

For each technique, you must apply a SIGNIFICANT quote from your selected chapter and cite page # and chapter title. You must then demonstrate how this quote applies to your movie by a

DETAILED analysis (see sample) of how that quote illuminates our understanding of both the scene AND the director’s intent.

Your thesis, which should be clear throughout the essay, is how this technique enhanced our understanding of the director’s intent in the movie. The director’s intent includes point of view,

attitudes toward men and women, politics, human rights, philosophy, etc. In other words, what is the director’s world view and how does the film make that view a powerful cinematic

experience?

Your concluding paragraph should compare and contrast the choices of these two directors in terms of how they use technique, their different focus and emphasis in their respective movies,

and overall, which movie you think was most original, powerful, successful.
