For this first assignment you will propose an issue that you intend to engage with for the duration of the semester. This means that you are responsible for selecting an issue that you can confidently contribute to from an evaluative and advocacy position. For this short paper, you should outline your positionality on the issue and develop one or several argumentative positions. In doing so, be sure to forecast your claims and anticipate oppositional arguments. Do not simply summarize a controversial issue or merely recite a popular polemic; rather, briefly map an issue and tell me why it is important. I suggest that you familiarize yourself with the protocols for these two argument types so you have an idea about why you are doing this assignment. Be creative, and please stay away from manufactured controversies (pseudo-debates) such as abortion where arguments are both gridlocked and hostile. Be willing to learn something by investigating a topic that you want to know more about. This assignment also asks you to provide an annotated bibliography to demonstrate your topical research and APA skills. “Annotated” means that you must provide a brief summary of the source (4-5 lines) after each citation in APA. You must provide a minimum of 10 sources that are correctly cited and adequately reviewed. This assignment should be neat and orderly. Remember that APA requires you to alphabetize sources and type everything in normal Times New Roman font without numbers, bullets, or additional spaces. 3-4 pages, plus annotated bibliography.
