This question can be refined to be more specific – it arises from the disappearance and death of Avonte Oquendo, the non-verbal autistic teen who went missing from his LIC special needs public school in October. Press coverage reveals the myriad security shortcomings and handling of his disappearance by school administrators; there’s possibly a second policy issue embedded in this case concerning educating autistic students safely, given their propensity to wander, according to autism advocates.
