Assignment 2: CRITICAL ANALYSIS
2: CRITICAL ANALYSIS
Details of task: By selecting works from exhibitions at the NGV on St Kilda Rd and at
Federation Square that may include, but are not restricted to Late Modern and
Contemporary Art, David McDiarmid and the design exhibition on Level 3 at NGV, St
Kilda Rd answer the following:
Which ideas informing artworks from the 197os-199os are the same as design
works from the same era and how are these expressed? By supporting,
extending upon, challenging or redirecting the ideas surrounding the design,
could you say the art forms its own separate discourse?
For this assignment, you will need to undertake three distinct activities:
o Select 2-3 art and design examples from the exhibitions at the NGV St Kilda Rd
and Federation Square.
o Become familiar with the general ideas surrounding modernism and
postmodernism and supplement these with the specific readings on
postmodernism supplied on Moodle.
o Formulate a 2,000 word formal academic response to the question which includes
footnotes and a bibliography.
You may like to consider the following when analysing the art and design works
selected:
o What sorts of ideas are being explored in the works and how do they seek to do
so?
o How does the work engage with the theoretical concerns outlined in the readings?
o How are the ideas expressed? Do they manifest through form, colour and
medium?
o To what extent is the work meaningful to an audience now?
