1. Representative Richard Pombo has decided that it will cost too much to recover your endangered species; he thinks the lost opportunities for economic development provide a justification for activating the œgod squad and seeking to exempt the species from the protection of the Endangered Species Act. You have been asked to provide a concise justification for why your species is worth saving from extinction. Think about all the arguments that might convince skeptics that your species is valuable and deserves to be saved (even if there will be economic repercussions). Drawing on ideas presented in this class, describe the two clearest and most compelling of those arguments. If you believe that your species should not be saved, provide similar arguments to support that decision. (One page maximum) 2. Conservation biologists often address both proximate and ultimate causes of endangerment when recovering an endangered species. Define what is meant by ultimate and proximate causes of endangerment. Then identify the specific ultimate and proximate causes of endangerment for your species (they probably won’t be spelled out in these terms in the plan, so be prepared to figure out what they might be). Which of these causes of endangerment seems to be the one that would be most likely to cause your species to go extinct? Why? (One page maximum) 3. (A) Describe 4 general approaches that can be used to regulate the exploitation of wild species. (B) If overexploitation has threatened your species, describe how one of these approaches has been or could be used to reduce the overexploitation. 4. Imagine that you are responsible for designing protected natural areas that will accommodate a viable population of your endangered species. (A) Describe four design criteria that you would consider, and (B) explain how each of those criteria addresses a specific need of your species. (One page maximum) 5. (A) Who controls (or owns) most of the habitat of your endangered species from the first writing assignment? (B) What challenges does this œownership present for efforts to maintain critical habitat for the species? (C) Under which type of œownership would the protection of the species’ critical habitat be easiest? Why? (One page maximum)
