RESEARCH ESSAY ASSIGNMENT

Prepare a 6 – 8 page researched essay about this Stephen King’s literary life. Your essay should incorporate a discussion of the following aspects of the author’s life and work:

 a BRIEF biography of the author (NO LONGER than 2 pages!)
 an in-depth discussion of the author’s body of work and critics’ reactions to it as a whole (This should make up the BULK of your essay)
 a discussion of how the story we are reading (The Man in the Black Suit) in this class fits into the author’s larger body of work (Is it representative of the author’s work? Is it different? How? Why?)

Remember, this is a 200-level course, so your essay should reveal at least sophomore-level thinking and writing skills!

Target length: 6 – 8 pages (I will NOT read fewer than 6 full pages nor more than 8 full pages!)
Remember, the Works Cited Page is NOT counted in your total text length

Format: MLA parenthetical (1-inch margins, standard font)

Tone: Formal academic American collegiate English

Sources: A MINIMUM of 8 separate cited SOURCES (not citations) is required!
INTERNET sources (websites) will NOT be accepted!

Reminders: Outside sources should be used as a way to back up your points. DO NOT simply string
together information taken from outside sources!
Attribute all information taken from outside sources; don’t drop in borrowed material “blind.”
Make it clear to the reader where your borrowed material begins and ends.
Direct quotes should be few and far between in college-level writing—certainly no more
than ONE per page! Paraphrase or summarize instead of using direct quotes. In
a paper this short, you should have NO BLOCK QUOTES.

A word on academic honesty:
BE SURE TO DOCUMENT ALL INFORMATION taken from outside sources that is not “common knowledge.” Information that IS “common knowledge” is not required to be documented.

FAILURE TO APPROPRIATELY DOCUMENT ALL INFORMATION AS NECESSARY IS, BY DEFINITION, PLAGIARISM. I am contractually and ethically required to report ALL instances of plagiarism to the department chairman. It is my personal policy to prosecute all instances of plagiarism to the fullest extent.

At the college level, there is NO SUCH THING as “ACCIDENTAL PLAGIARISM.” It is YOUR responsibility to know the rules of academic honesty and to abide by them.
