For this paper, think about how the development of a specific type of technology can effect cultural change. Now pick a specific current or historical political,

cultural, artistic, musical or literary movement to write about in terms of the effect of technology. For instance, you could look at the effect of social media on the

Arab Spring, or the effect of the televised pictures of the war in Viet Nam on the anti-war movement of the late 60s, or the effect of ebooks on the self-publishing

movement. In other words, you need to think about how a specific development in technology made some movement in culture possible that was not possible before its use.

Now, you need to think about whether or not that specific type of technology has had a positive or negative effect on a that specific movement. Take a position–either

technology has had a positive effect on this movement, or it has had a negative effect on this movement–and then demonstrate this position using examples. The more

specific your examples are, the better.

While you will be expressing your opinion in part here, you need to have proof of that opinion, meaning that you need evidence to back it up. As such, you should have

at least one properly cited reference. Please keep in mind that you MUST take a position. If you do not take a position, you will not receive a grade for your essay.

Now (you aren’t done yet!) you need to think about how someone would argue against you and you need to include an opposing viewpoint in your paper. For instance, if

you argue that social media had a positive effect on the Arab Spring, then the opposition might think that social media had a negative effect, making it easier for

violence to erupt…or something like that.

Finally, you need to argue against the opposing viewpoint and reassert your point of view.

Keep in mind this essay needs to have five elements:

A specific movement(political, cultural, artistic, musical or literary, etc.)
A specific kind of technology (Facebook, Twitter, the electric light, digital photography, etc.) Note “the internet” is not a specific kind of technology. It is a

group of technologies that needs to be parsed into something specific. Also, television is not really that specific either. You need to specify what kind of shows, or

a specific show etc.
A position…did the technology have a positive or negative effect on the movement? Decide and argue!
An objection to your argument
A rebuttal to the objection to your argument.?

For this topic the sources must have went viral in order to be a good source to reference in the paper!
