THE IMMUNE SYSTEM AS A THERAPEUTIC AGENT

Immune system is the body’s defense against infectious organisms and other invaders. The immune system attacks organisms which causes diseases in the body. “Immune system is an alchemist’s dream “( Hans Wigzell 1993). It also talks of how these viruses and antigens can be prevented from intruding in the body causing diseases through different suggestions. Using components of the immune system as biological mimics (naturally occurring hormone) and enzymes that can help in treatment of diseases

It emphasizes on using knowledge of the immune system to strengthen its response to a given antigen, direct it to combat an overlooked foe or organ rejection incase it shows up. Also there are other therapies that are being crafted to increase attacks on cancer and AIDS.

My question is how can immune system be improved to fight with bacteria and viruses? According to the article, current vaccines are currently improved to make them more specific and to eliminate any adverse reactions that immunization may be accompanied with. Suggestion has been made of limiting immune system responses incase of allergy, autoimmunity and organ rejection by pinpointing and blocking the action of specific molecules. Also understanding the type of illness would give a clear way to the therapist to know the way to eliminate adverse reactions.
